Here are some tips for parents to make the most out of the few toys their children should have.

Research is doing a good job of explaining why children should not have too many toys. It is that time of year, when parents are going through their child’s playrooms and bedrooms trying to clear out toys. They are not doing it because they are trying to declutter for the new year, they are trying to make sense of everything that their children just got for Christmas. This is also when a lot of parents realize just how many toys their children have, and they may start to wonder if there are ever too many toys. Toys are supposed to help a child grow and develop, but there can be a point where there are too many, and it is actually hindering their development.

According to Medical Xpress and ABC News, researchers are explaining why children can have too many toys, and they are also offering some tips for parents to make the most out of the few toys their children should have.

The biggest concern when it comes to having too many toys is that it can be overstimulating and this is what can impact their ability to learn and play creatively. When there are too many toys around, children often don’t know what to play with and they end up hopping from toy to toy instead of focusing their attention on one for very long.

Adults can often experience this as well, and many adults may be unable to work if their desk or counters are too cluttered, and it is the same principle with children and toys. Research has pointed to the fact that fewer toys can lead to playtime that is of higher quality to children and it allows them to build the ability to pay attention and to play more creatively. They are able to focus on one toy at a time.

If mom is wanting to limit the number of toys that her child has, she may not know where to start. It is important to note that parents don’t have to throw out all of their child’s toys, but they may want to do some reorganizing. A great tip is to have a rotation schedule, where you pack up some of the toys and put them away. After a few weeks or months, rotate the toys out. Now a child has “new” toys that they have not seen in a while and it will help them explore. It is also important to focus on categories of toys that help a child develop. Mom should be thinking of functional toys, active toys, learning toys, creative toys and make believe. These are all great places to start.
